Overwhelmed and Overeating
Apr 29, 2023Do you think you are weak and that you lack discipline? Do you also find yourself overloading your life with to-do lists and then end up in overwhelm? If your answer is “yes”, then you’ll get so much out of this blog post.
It’s important to pause before we react, and to understand why we are choosing try solve to an emotional problem with a physical solution. That's exactly what emotional eating is.
Do you judge yourself for what you eat? Do you think you are a lesser person when you eat a certain amount of food? If you do, or if you ever have, I know you’ll get a lot out of this.
A lot of try to intellectualise our emotions. We think that taking control of overeating or emotional eating is simply a matter of having the willpower to follow a plan - and that if you haven't succeeded, it's because you haven't tried hard enough.
That’s simply not true. Great avoidance tactic from dealing with uncomfortable emotions, but not a long term solution.
If you’re stuck in a cycle with overeating, working harder is not the answer. In fact, it will likely make things worse. There's an easier way, and you don't need to rely on willpower – in fact, you shouldn’t.
The "willpower approach" can actually contribute to ongoing vicious cycles with overeating, yo-yo weight gain, falling “off track”, losing motivation, and starting over (and over and over). Along the way, there’s likely to be a lot of frustration and even self-blame for not creating the results that you want.
The real truth is that if freeing yourself from overeating feels hard, you're probably missing a key piece of the puzzle.
I bet you’re pretty talented at solving problems and creating results in lots of other areas of your life. You know how to do tough things. This whole overeating/emotional eating business is completely solvable too - when you have the right strategy.
It all begins with understanding that you do what you do for a reason.
There’s a reason you’re overeating, or reaching for food when you aren’t really hungry.
As long as that reason (often something I call a Hidden Hunger) goes unaddressed, the craving and the urge to eat is going to persist – and there’s not enough willpower in the world to resist a craving that never goes away.
Diet Culture and the fitness industry can seem saturated at times with the notion that you shouldn’t trust yourself.
- Track calories- because you couldn’t possibly gauge your energy balance correctly without it.
- Buy slimming products- because you’ve failed at everything else.
- Join a slimming club- because you can’t do this by yourself.
- Use your iwatch to track all your training- because then how many calories will know you can eat back?
The entire industry is based on lowering your self confidence, taking your autonomy away and buying into the notion of you not being able to do this yourself.
